The 5th Scream Movie is a Better Sequel than we Thought!

When it was announced by Paramount Pictures they were green lighting a fifth Scream film. It was met with criticism by fans because this one will not be by Wes Craven and how do you continue to make the franchise fresh again after over ten years since the fourth one came out. Luckily the directors and writers who brought Ready or Not, found away to make the franchise refreshing again for the fifth installment.

PROS

The writing for Scream five was a slasher thriller from the beginning to almost the end. The writing was written very intelligent for the characters as it self acknowledged its self with the rules of the horror slasher films, and how to survive. Using modern technology made Ghostface even scarier with how the character stoled data an manipulate his victims was fresh view. Than calling a house phone or cell phone.

This Ghostface was very tech savvy which made this Ghostface more deadly compared to the previous sequels. The fifth one is a continuity from the previous four however this one focus on new characters connected to the original film that made it good for new audiences and long time fans to watch.

The break out star was protagonist Sam Carpenter played by Melissa Barrera. She does a great job carrying the movie as we learned she is connected to someone from the first movie that will get long time fans hooked immediately. She has bright future a head after two breakout movies. The killings and jump scenes were well done. One scene I think will get people to jump.

The fifth one made a lot of call backs to the original movie. Mathew Lillard, Drew Barrymore, Jamie Kennedy, Henry Winkler, Adam Brody from the previous movies made quick cameos. I liked how the film was for Wes Craven as they named a character Wes played by Dylan Minnette.

CONS

The final act or the big reveal falls apart in my opinion. This was the big issue in the previous sequels. The reveal is something that was done in Scream four so nothing was new about it. The ending falls flat.

It was pointless to bring back Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette to reprise their long time roles. Obviously they had to be there to get the long time fans but this story did not need them to save the day. The new characters were great and didn’t need them to be involved.

OVERALL 7.5/10

In my opinion Scream Four is still the better sequel but Scream five is the second best sequel to the horror franchise. Hopefully this is not the last we see Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter from the franchise. I think the creative team did a great job passing the franchise from Sidney to Sam, because Sidney’s story is over.
